Follow behavior from a contract to an application

The architecture separates the meaning of a capability from its implementation, delivery surface and deployment. Each layer has a job that can be inspected.

EXPLORE THE IDEA

Where does each responsibility belong?

A customer asks to change the delivery address on an order. Trace the meaning of that request through its implementation and the interfaces that expose it.

UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP

The shared definition

Give the action a stable identity, accepted input, expected result and applicable policy.

IN A CONCRETE SITUATIONAn address change means the same thing whether it starts in a form or an agent tool.

Define the behavior at the foundation

Contracts describe the operations, data and expectations that consumers rely on. They give an API, an interface and an agent a shared point of reference. That does not make a declaration an enforcement mechanism by itself: handlers, adapters and runtime checks must implement the promise. The contracts and adapters guide explains that distinction.

Follow a request to export a report through three interfaces. The useful common ground is the registered operation and its boundary.

Where does this request begin?
A CONCRETE SITUATION

A form helps someone make a valid request.

A person selects a report and gives a reason for the export.

01 / Form

Collect the report and reason, and explain errors in the person’s language.

What changes

Labels, validation messages and the way the result is presented.

What stays explicit

The report, required reason, business implementation and configured execution checks.

FOLLOW THE CONSEQUENCE

The form can make a requirement clear. The server still needs to reject a request that bypasses the form.

Where this explanation comes from

An authored situation, grounded in the linked source guides. Choosing a case explores its expected responsibilities; it does not execute an operation.

02

Compose capabilities into useful products

Compose only the layers the product needs. The architecture gives each layer a distinct responsibility:

  • Integrations connect provider APIs and external systems.
  • Modules and bundles assemble capabilities into useful units.
  • Applications choose the surfaces and runtime composition people use. Follow feature composition when the work moves beyond one operation.
03

Trace a change through its consumers

A change can affect a schema, handler, UI, generated artifact or integration even when it begins in one source file. Review those relationships against the selected release and verify the affected runtime paths. Versioning guidance and runtime boundaries help distinguish compatible evolution from a change that requires migration or additional implementation.

A change has an owner and a set of consequences.Trace the mechanism · 3 ways to look closer

A report export now needs a reason. Follow the change through authored meaning, derived output and a caller that still uses the old input.

Which part are you changing?
A CONCRETE SITUATION

The requirement becomes part of declared behavior.

A required reason is added to the operation input.

01 / Author

Change the declaration that owns the required input.

What changes

Callers must now supply the new field for that contract version.

What stays explicit

The handler still decides how the reason affects the business work.

FOLLOW THE CONSEQUENCE

Plan compatibility for existing consumers. A required input can be a behavioral break even if the handler’s main implementation is unchanged.

Where this explanation comes from
